Having a good scanner can make your work easy when you want to practice 3D scanning and 3D printing. A good scanner is one that accurately captures an object’s image from all dimensions.

Benhard’s of VirtuMake has been working on his latest project which is a DIY LIDAR Time-of-flight-Scanner. This scanner works similarly to how a laser can reach out to an object irrespective of the distance, then it reflects back to a sensor when capturing the object’s image.

The scanner uses a hacked Fluke Laser rangefinder which is readily available in stores and it also has a USB interface. For you to accurately scan using the Time of flight scanner, it is necessary to mount it on stepper motors like he did. There is an Arduino and a Python script that controls the motors by moving the range finder. From here, it calculates a point cloud and saves it in Ply format which you can easily view in Meshlab.

When there is a fire in your area, the first thing which you want to see is a Fire Brigade. If there are some people stuck in the building, then firefighter are the only ones who are considered as life savers. But at the end of the day, they themselves are human beings and their safety should also be kept in mind. There are two main things which assure the safety of a firefighter: one how well they can see and second how well they may breath. Though the gas masks used by them are of very good quality but there is always a chances of improvement.

There is a UK based design consultancy named as Design Reality who has designed the prototype of an improved version of gas mask. They used the Objet260 Connex multi-material 3D printer and this was designed by US Fire Services and UK Ministry of Defense. According to new safety standards in the US, they wanted to improve the security situation for their firefighters by introducing better gas masks. Their aim was to minimize the Carbon Dioxide re-breathe levels down to only 1% and it became possible with Design Reality 3D printed Gas masks.

Team at Design Reality took very accurate measurement to bring out best gas masks ever. Every single part of the mask was prototyped very carefully.

As according to Stratasys:

And these rubber/rigid parts were printed together as a single homogenous piece – thereby eliminating the work of separately printing and gluing the different material elements of the mask by hand!

The new 3D printed gas masks respirators are easy to use and has amazing view ability. They have reduced the CO2 re-breathe levels to 0.75 %.

The Minister for Defense procurement, Lord Bach said:

The respirator is no mere gas mask. It will give our troops unparalleled levels of protection in the field from all manners of threats.

How many of you have heard about Optomec, Incorporation? They have invented 3D printed Antennas for mobile devices which has wonderfully reduced the production cost and increased the efficiency as well. The company recently announced their development of new antennas to be used in mobile devices.

aerosol jetprocess

The process used for the development of these antennas is based on Patented Aerosol Jet Printed Electronics technology by Optomec. This technology is used  in order to print electronic devices on planar and 3D surfaces. The Aerosol Jet printing uses aerodynamic focusing in order to produce nanomaterial fine circuitry. The components were created without the use of patterns or any mask. This technology was also used to print conformal antennas but the process was successful as it could correctly controls the geometry, location and thickness of deposits. All this added to better antenna performance  and the good thing is that no environmentally harmful stuff is used in this procedure.

If you want to have a look at delta-style 3D printer, you should check this one which has been created by Polish Maker Arkadiusz Śpiewak. This printer is created on the basis of delta style Rostock. He first created the basic design of this printer and then tested its movement in Blender. After it has been successfully tested, the external frame of the printer and parts were added into it. He order the parts and meanwhile started working on the frame of the printer. In order to give a proper structure to the three pillars of delta, a board was designed by him and all linear actuators will be mounted on him.

With the help of fixing external frame and other electronics into the structure, Arkadiusz’ first prototype of the printer was ready. But the first test did not went much successful as the structure was not erected with complete stability and vibrated too much while testing. In order to overcome these problems, a separate part for the platform and for holding arms in Blender were designed and welded with the help of aluminum. This brought enough improvements as giving stability to the platform and helping it to work properly.

There are some people who are not happy with 3D printing being able to produce plastic undetectable guns. For those people, here is some satisfactory news as now 3D printing will be used to fight crime. Now 3D printers are being used to help print replicas of bullets. Recently, “Officer Blue” episode of CSI: New York which was aired on 12 November 2005 showed a Zprinter 310 from ZCorporation to print 3D replica of bullet.

If you want to know more about it, have a look at this video:

With the help of additive manufacturing technology, the manufactruing process can be achieved with less money and more efficiency. But now it has moved ahead and it can be used to solve crimes. Even the Tokyo Police Department has used 3D printer to 3D print the model of crime scene. This will definitely help them in solving cases more easily. Instead of visiting crime scenes over and over again, they can create 3D models of these scenes at their stations.

Not only crime scenes, in University of Alabama at Birmingham, students successfully printed a footprint. These photographs were created using crime-scene photographs.

Jason Linville, a member of CIA said:

Once you have footprints as digital images, you can easily compare them with one another to generate a more objective match than you could by relying on the judgment of a human analyst,” he says. “Then because you can print an impression that doesn’t require handling, like a plaster cast, you can create multiple copies that are exactly the same.

No doubt preservation of these crime evidence will help increase the situation of fighting crimes.

3D-printed-XYZ-shoes-earl-stewart-designboom-feat-150x150Check out this new foot wear made just for your foot ! It will change the way you look at shoes with its health effects and the intricate design that suits you.

According to Daniel Lieberman, professor of Evolutionary Biology at Harvard, we are losing the physiology with or own feet as we use shoes in our modern society. These modern shoes affects our body as it receives the impact from the ground as we use our footwear. This made Earl Stewart’s XYZ shoe series an interesting design for a healthy foot wear. This series will make you understand the importance of custom-made shoes.

Earl Stewart pursued his contemporaries by creating 3D-printed shoes  that is customized for the wearer’s foot. The main purpose of this product is to produce something that ensures maximum comfort, stability and foot alignment. He uses Microsoft Kinect to scan the foot of the client and print something that will mirror its contours. After the scanning procedure, he uses Objet Connex multi-material printer to print different densities of rubber and plastic on a given layer to fabricate a custom shoe that both looks like an art piece and actually provides support.

This new knowledge allows us to be more aware of what’s good for us especially with our feet. It delivers us to a conclusion that we cannot only make custom-made home decors wth 3D printing machines but we can also create our very own footwear that brings wealth to our health.

What Micro 3D Printing Has to Offer?

Micro-3D Printing is not a new term but making it effective on human body would definitely be something new. In order to make electrochemical reactions effective on human body, controllable conductive material needs to introduced in this process and send current when required. Make sure the electric current is very small so they do not disturb any natural process. To check the experiment, some researchers in Japan tried conductive and tiny 3D printing.

Chemists and Physicist at Yokohama National University, started working on this task of creating 3D objects with the help of conductivity. There were two main methods which were used to make it all possible. In first method, Ultraviolet light was used but it did not went successful because laser beat it. After the research and experimentation, it was decided that 3D models when left at high heat would turn into carbon which itself is a conducting material. But this much heat would change the shape of the models so to avoid this, a special material named as resotcinol diglycidyl was added to the resin. In short, the whole process will be like that: The photopolymer can be made hard to take different shapes with the help of laser and then this will be baked to take a carbon layer and no change in the shape will be noticed.

The main theme of this research published in Optical Materials Express expressed in following words:

Potential applications of the new photopolymers include 3-D carbon electrodes for fuel cells or batteries and interfaces for biosensors.

If this research could be implemented in reality on commercial and industrial basis, this will definitely give a new worth to 3D printing all around the globe. If you want to read more about this Micro 3D printing researched, read here.

According to Wenman:

It’s been a labor of love for me. I’ve been doing it for myself, for other art lovers, and for students and educators—for anyone who’s dreamed of owning fine sculptural art, but hasn’t had the means until now.

sculpture 3d scan

Wenman is determined to create 3D printed designs of every cultural sculpture present in the world and he believes that one day all these 3D printable designs will be available to everyone. He started his work from a museum in Switzerland, the Skulpturehalle Basel museum because the authority allowed him to take 3D scans of art sculptures in their hall. He was also allowed to share these 3D printed designs with anyone. This Switzerland museum has a collection of around 2000 high quality art sculptures from Greece and Rome but Wenman decided to start off with only 20 art sculptures.  To implement a project this bog, Wenman of course needed fund so he launched a project on Kickstarter and started a campaign to raise funds.

With the help of this fund, Wenman will be able to stay in Switzerland for weeks and perform photography, scanning and other post processing and 3D printing functions without any hesitation. Of course all of this requires  money and an artist alone cannot do it without all of your financial support.

Wenman shared his plans:

I will 3D scan a selection of plaster casts of important, archetypal sculptures at the Skulpturhalle and publish the scans and 3D printable files into the public domain, copyright-free, so that anyone, anywhere, can download, alter, adapt, or 3D print them for themselves.

All the 3D printable files prepared by Wenman will be available at Thingiverse for anyone who wants to take advantage of them. If you want to donate some money for this project, go on Kickstarter page.

Here comes another RepRap 3D printer named as Simpson. All of you may know about the Quantum Evolution according to which evolution can happen in abrupt burst. The printer is specified to show its quick divergence from other existing designs. This guy Nicholas Seward started working on his mission t make a new 3D printer which has no linear rails and has low center of gravity. This will be fully printable except for bolt, bearings, bed and electronics.

People are actually loving the design and the proof is so many suggestions, ideas, and encouragement on the Simpson’s development forum. Only during a month, design has been improved from just an idea to 3 prototypes so soon we can expect a complete working machine.

Lots of initial designers were proposed by Quentin Harley’s Morgan and Johann Rocholl’s Rostock and after some iterations a delta architecture was finalized. Traditionally, a delta robot has arms connected above the work envelop while Simpson has them connected below in order to eradicate any support structure and of course to keep the center of gravity low. There is another major difference between traditional delta robots and Simpson is the joints; Simpson drives elbow joints rather than shoulder joints. With the help of this, a huge reduction in the inverse kinematic equation could be observed.

Robotics professor, Ilian Bonev think that design is truly original and innovative. This printer can be made ready in less than $400. Though it is only in the prototype stage till now but it is expected to be released on 15th June 2013.

Usually any automaker company introduce new designs of any vehicle after a period of 3 – 4 years but things are definitely changing with additive manufacturing technology. Now automakers can perform car designing and manufacturing more effectively and with an increased speed.

The 2013 model of Chevrolet Malibu faced some criticism, so General Motors decided to completely redesign it. With the help of 3D printing, redesigning of the interior and exterior of 2014 Chevrolet Malibu was made possible only in few months.

Pininfarina Sergio

Pininfarina Sergio

This was indeed inspirational for other car manufacturing companies. Recently, another Italian car design company, Pininfarina has announced that they are using 3D printing technology in order to design their new car. The concept car is named the sergio after honorary chairman of Pininfarina, Sergio Pininfarina and it is designed in only 4 months which is pretty extraordinary as compared to usual automotive time scale.

Pininfarina automakers used advanced 3D modeling software which they got from French aerospace-tech gurus, Dassault Systemes. The best thing about this technology is the experiment facility it offers to its designer at the very early stages of development. Not only does it increase the production speed but also reduce the manufacture and material cost. With the help of this digital technology, designers were able to design and verify their production at different levels in 3D. Most appealing fact about this technology is that all of the amazing ideas by designers about color, texture and other technical features were added in one vehicle model.

Sergio

Sergio

Features of Sergio:

The Sergio features are inspired by the Ferrari 458 so you can observe light-weight carbon-fiber body and stylish design. The manufacture and material cost was comparably low because of Pininfarina using digital tools in the manufacture process.

According to the design director of the car, Fabio Filippini:

Our search for purity, performance and emotion are the very values that Sergio has transmitted to us throughout his career. Concept modeling, focused on these three core values, is our forte and Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE design solutions help us transform our ideas into reality.

According to the company, 5 Sergio will be ready for sale in 2015 on $2 million each.

China is third in the race of  using technology for space facilities and supplying manpower and necessary stuff to orbiting module with the help of different docking methods. Recently Northwest China’s Gobi Desert  launched Shenzhou 10 spacecraft on Tuesday. Scientists have spent many years to invent such equipment which will make life easier for astronauts but the jump 3D printing has offered is not provided by anyone else.

According to the Professor Cui Guoqi, the research team in Tianjin University has started developing seats for Chinese astronauts. These bath-tub like seats were also installed on Shenzhou 5 – 9 spacecrafts since year 1998.

Cui said:

During launch and landing these specially designed seats could protect the astronauts, especially their backbones, from being hurt by the jolt during acceleration. Physical data from the astronauts are required to make 3D model of these suits.

The 3D measurement was increased from 800,000 pixels to 2,000,000 pixels and with more precise data, better seats can be created. After the date is collected, it is then processed and passed to a 3D printer. With the help pf 3D printing technology, engineers were able to create special seats for every astronaut according to their requirements. Before the seat is finalized, it has to be tested by that individual astronaut for all adjustments.

If any of your remember history, you could recall sinking of Henry VIII’s favorite warship, ‘the Mary Rose’ which caused death of around 500 crew members. The ship was recovered from the depth of ocean in 1982 and around 100 skeletons were also taken out of the water. Ten skulls of those recovered skeletons were sent to the University of Swansea for research and analysis.

MaryRose ship hall

MaryRose ship hall

The team at Swansea University did not only stop on analysis but they worked with Swedish facial reconstruction expert Oscar Nilsson to reconstruct the face of one of those recovered skeletons. Of course 3D scanning and Printing technology was used in making this method successful. These skulls were analysed properly by the team and a 3D model of them was created. Then this model was used to build man’s face muscles very carefully. Nilsson is already working with the Police department in reconstructing the faces of unidentified bodies.

You might be wondering where did they get all this information. As he was an anchor so the skeleton was already showing signs of stress injury from pulling heavy and longbow. All other signs could be taken from his recovered skeleton as silver ring and ivory armguard was taken out of the water. He was a young fellow, not more than 20 – 30.

This is indeed a very exciting invention because now people whose faces no one has ever seen can be brought to shape. Now, we will be able to see the faces of not only wealthy and famous people but also whoever we wish to!

According to Nick Owen from the university’s College of Engineering:

This is a face of an ordinary man, albeit in a crack regiment, and he hasn’t been seen for almost 500 years. Thanks to 21st century technology and expertise, we can bring him vividly back to life, and understand more about his world.

According to the Engineers and Nilsson, the main aim was to reconstruct replica  of the skull without damaging it which was performed quite successfully with the help of 3D laser scanner. Then this image was given for 3D printing where it was printed in only 2 days. The reconstructed face, along with many other artefacts from the Mary Rose, is now on display in the new Mary Rose Museum in Portsmouth.
